The Department of Mathematics, University of Calicut came into existence in September 1976 during the Fifth Plan period. The Department offer M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes. The Department conducts Faculty Seminars in each month, Workshops for School students, Dr.P. Kesava Menon Endowment lecture series, remedial classes for weaker students. Special coaching are given to students for NET, arrangements are made to avail scholarships for students from various agencies, Honoring of achievers(Students), The weaker students are identified and given additional coaching. The Department regularly revises the curriculum by considering UGC curriculum and feed back of students, faculty & Board of Studies. For effective teaching the modern teaching aids are used (Laptop, Smart board, etc). Faculty members often use power point presentation for their lectures. Encourages students to submit their dissertation using LaTeX. The Department has a tutorial pattern where the tutors give necessary advice to their wards.
Special attention has been given to both Slow learners and Advanced learners in order to increase the academic standard of the Department Also Monthly evaluation Processes for Assessing the Progress of research Scholars is made as a policy of the Department . To function the Department in a smooth way a Ragging redressal committee and Women’s sexual harassment redressal committee are formed. Training of Software Packages like LaTeX is introduced for students and encouraged them to submit their dissertation using LaTeX. Collaboration with KSOM (An Autonomous Mathematics Research Institutive under NBHM & Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment( KSCSTE)- has been sought to assure high quality research. The Department has an air-conditioned Library with a collection of around 7778 books of various levels covering the major topics in mathematics. The Department subscribes the following Journals ,Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society,Resonance and Bulletin of the Kerala Mathematical Association. The Mathematical Intelligencer Proceedings of the Royal society of Edinberg(A) Mathematics Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society Proceedings of the Japan Academy Series, Mathematics News Letter of RMS. We also have access to a large collection of e-journals subscribed through UGC – Infonet consortium. The Department also has well furnished class rooms with smart boards and staff rooms. A well equipped Computer Lab with software like Maple, Mathematica and high speed internet connectivity helps the students to update their knowledge and to get a clear picture of the subject taught in the class room. Wi-fi facility is made available to all Staff and Students. Each faculty member has a fully furnished separate office with computer and Internet facilities to concentrate on their studies and to mobilize their research activities. The students and staff are also supplied with sufficient furniture. Girls students are provided with a well maintained rest rooms.
